How can the cable industry reduce the risk of CPR non-conformance?

Since July 2017, manufacturers and dealers have been obliged to comply with the Construction Products Regulation (CPR). This classification system applies across the EU and relates to the fire behaviour of construction products, with the aim of improving the safety of buildings.

The Regulation, rightly so, has accelerated the drive of the cable industry to improve cable safety. It applies to those cables considered to be ‘construction products’, including power, telecommunications, data and control cables. Standards they must achieve include fire (resistance and reaction to fire) and hazardous substances (emission and content).

Three years after the introduction of CPR for cables, what’s the view of the cable industry?

Europacable sponsored a pan-European survey to look at the market perception and challenges in fire safety and compliance. Nearly 3,000 responses were received when the survey was conducted between December 2019 and January 2020. Of those European electrical professionals that responded, 75% are confident that they can apply the CPR correctly in their work.

Cimteq clients in particular can rest assured that their industry-leading CableBuilder software can support CPR compliance through:

• generating a Declaration of Performance (DoP) in multiple languages;
• applying formulas to identify automatically which designs the DoP applies to; and alert design and commercial terms should a design become non-compliant;
• a robust workflow control system that ensures designs are reviewed and certified by the correct people; and
• version control so all changes to designs can be traced back to the person who made the change, when they made the change and why they made the change.

In short, CableBuilder saves time, and checks compliance to reduce the risk of non-conformance. It dramatically reduces the cost of maintaining the CPR compliance system.
